How Puzzles Are Made

Every puzzle on Useful Crosswords is built around a single theme — a topic that connects all of the answers. Here’s what goes into each one.

Theme selection

Each puzzle starts with a topic: something specific enough that the answers feel cohesive, but broad enough to support a full grid. Think “Ocean Life” or “Classic Rock Music” rather than “Things”.

Grid construction

The grid is built so that answers interlock across and down throughout the grid. Answers don’t repeat, and the layout is designed to feel balanced and solvable.

Clue writing

Clues are matched to difficulty — straightforward definitions for easy puzzles, more indirect or playful cluing for medium difficulty.

Quality checks

Every puzzle is verified before publication:

  • All cells are reachable (no isolated regions)
  • No duplicate answer words
  • Minimum word length of three letters
  • Clues match their answers
